Field and Target

A hunter holster has a different job than a carry rig, since it has to hold a long barrel pistol or a scoped revolver through miles of walking, a pack harness, and weather that would ruin a lesser holster. The DeSantis field and target collection covers that ground with chest rigs, cross draw leather, and belt holsters shaped around large frame revolvers and big autoloaders, built from top grain steer hide, heavy duty ballistic nylon, and precision molded Kydex. Hunters running a scoped gun, guides working backcountry, and target shooters who need a loaded holster that stays put on the range will all find a fit here. Every rig is made in our New York shop by a family-owned company that has been building holsters by hand since Gene DeSantis started at his kitchen table.

What Hunters Are Saying

Hunter Holster FAQs

Hunter Holster FAQs

What is the best hunter holster for a scoped revolver?
A chest holster is usually the answer for a scoped revolver, because the scope and long barrel make belt carry awkward once you add a pack. The Yukon Hunting Rig handles large-frame revolvers with an adjustable harness and cartridge loops, and the Outdraw Chest Rig is precision-molded from Kydex sheet with optics compatibility built in. Check each product page for your exact gun fit.
Should I choose leather or nylon for hunting holsters?
Leather holsters offer a quiet draw and mold to your body over time, which suits still hunting and traditional revolver setups. Ballistic nylon and Kydex shed water, weigh less, and keep consistent retention in bad weather. We build both because different hunts call for different gear. Our guide to hunting chest holsters walks through the tradeoffs in more detail.
Can these holsters be worn cross draw?
Yes. The Wild Hog is ambidextrous and wears strong-side or cross-draw, which is the standard setup for anyone sitting in a stand, riding, or driving with a firearm on the belt. Cross-draw also keeps a long barrel gun from fouling on a seat back.
Do field and target holsters have a thumb break or retention strap?
Many models use an adjustable retention strap or an adjustable tension device rather than a thumb break, so you set draw resistance yourself. Retention style is listed on each product page, and our belt holster and shoulder holster lines carry thumb break options if that is what you prefer. For a backup gun in the field, a pocket holster from our concealment line pairs well with a chest rig.
Will these holsters fit my gun and barrel length?
Each holster is molded for specific makes, models, and barrel lengths, so check the product description for your pistol or revolver. If you do not see your firearm listed, contact us. We add new fits constantly and handle custom requests, or visit our FAQ page for more.
